9-0-5 Premium Beer 12 Oz Zip/Tab Top Can

9-0-5 Premium Beer by Drewrys

The 9-0-5 Premium Beer 12 oz zip/tab top can represents a notable chapter in contract brewing and private-label retail history. Produced by Drewrys Ltd., U.S.A., Inc. in South Bend, Indiana, this can was packaged specifically for distribution through the prominent 9-0-5 Liquor Store chain based in St. Louis, Missouri.

Origins and History

The "9-0-5" name traced back to the flagship location of the retail chain founded at 905 North 12th Street in St. Louis following the repeal of Prohibition. To offer an economical proprietary beverage to its regional customer base, the retail chain contracted several regional facilities to can beer under its house name. Drewrys of South Bend served as one of these key packaging partners, supplying the market with cans bearing the store's distinctive identity.

Design and Collector Significance

The can graphics feature the bold numeric "9-0-5" brand prominently across the face, framed by clean mid-century heraldic shield accents. Because the retailer shifted production among various contract brewers over its lifespan, cans displaying the Drewrys South Bend mandatory statement stand apart from editions filled by other regional facilities. Minor variations exist across different manufacturing runs from the South Bend brewery, including slight shifts in legal text arrangement and lid stamps, making this can a popular subject among collectors specializing in private labels and Indiana brewing history.
