A-1 Beer 12 Oz Zip/Tab Top Can

Phoenix National Brewing A-1 Can

The A-1 Beer label represents one of the most prominent chapters in Southwestern brewing history. Originally created by the Arizona Brewing Company in downtown Phoenix, A-1 grew to become the state's signature brew and a regional powerhouse across the American Southwest, famously promoted under the slogan "The Western Way to Say Welcome".

Following industry consolidation, the Baltimore-based National Brewing Company acquired the Phoenix brewery and assumed production of the heritage A-1 brand. Under National's stewardship, the Phoenix facility continued canning A-1 for distribution across Arizona and surrounding states, placing the National Brewing name alongside the Phoenix municipal mandatory.

For breweriana collectors, this container documents a pivotal transitional era in beverage manufacturing, capturing the period when iconic independent regional labels were absorbed into multi-plant national networks. Variations of this can exist across production runs, featuring differences in mandatory text layouts, listed brewery city groups, and lithograph details.

The enduring cultural footprint of the A-1 label in Arizona remains significant among hobbyists; the state's chapter of the Brewery Collectibles Club of America was originally founded at the Phoenix plant and named the A-1 Chapter in homage to the brand.
