The Brand

A-1 was originally introduced in the early 1940s and quickly rose to become Arizona's dominant regional beer. Positioned as a staple of Southwestern hospitality, the brand became widely known through its iconic slogan, "The Western Way to Say Welcome". A-1 reinforced its local identity through famous marketing partnerships, including commissioned artwork by cowboy artist Lon Megargee and broadcasts sponsoring the Phoenix Suns. In later years, the brand adopted the tagline "Arizona's Original," highlighting its deep regional roots through commemorative thematic releases.

The Brewery

The Phoenix brewing facility originated as the Arizona Brewing Company, established in 1933 shortly after the repeal of Prohibition. For decades, it remained Arizona's lone commercial brewing facility, flourishing through the mid-20th century. As national industry consolidation intensified, the brewery was purchased by Carling in 1964, later merged into Carling-National, and was acquired by the G. Heileman Brewing Company in 1979. Heileman operated the Phoenix plant until closing the historic site in 1985, ending over fifty years of brewing at the location.
