A-1 Premium Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Phoenix's Historic A-1 Heritage

The A-1 Premium Beer 12-ounce tab top can produced under the National banner in Phoenix, Arizona, represents a pivotal chapter in Southwest brewing history. Originally introduced by the Arizona Brewing Company, A-1 became the state's defining regional brew, long celebrated by the famous slogan "The Western Way to Say Welcome".

When the National Brewing Company took control of the Phoenix facility in the mid-1960s, it preserved the local icon, packaging the brand in tab top formats that were rapidly expanding across retail shelves throughout the country. National's stewardship kept the cherished Southwest label flowing across bowling alleys, regional events, and grocery stores throughout the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Collectors value this specific Phoenix issue for its deep connection to Arizona lore. During its mid-century height, A-1 famously commissioned Western artist Lon Megargee to create legendary promotional paintings—such as "Cowboy's Dream"—that cemented the brand's place in Southwestern popular culture. The brand also maintained a major presence through local athletics, serving as an early sponsor for Arizona sports teams.

Mandatory brewery text on this can identifies Phoenix alongside National's network of facilities, reflecting the consolidation era when national brewing companies maintained local legacy brands. Text and graphic variations exist across production runs, stemming from updates to mandatory distribution lines and slight packaging adjustments over time. As an emblem of Phoenix's brewing tradition during a transformative era of American can manufacturing, this piece remains a prized addition to Southwestern collections.
