ABC Premium Ale Flat Top Can

ABC Premium Ale Flat Top Can

The ABC Premium Ale flat top is a 12-ounce steel can dating from the mid-20th century. Finished in metallic emerald green and cream, the container features bold brand typography alongside an angled rectangular badge declaring the product "PROPERLY AGED IN THE BREWERY CELLARS." The bottom rim band bears the specific mandatory statement "BREWED AND PACKED BY GOLD BRAU BREWING CO., CHICAGO, ILL.," identifying this distinct packaging variation within its production series.

Originating from classic American brewing traditions, the ABC brand name was licensed and packaged across multiple regional markets as an approachable, quality-driven staple. The ale variant was distinguished by its all-green color scheme, contrasting with the red colorway reserved for its standard lager counterpart. Marketing for the line centered heavily on cellar aging and traditional brewing integrity, providing consumers with a dependable option in competitive metropolitan and regional beer markets.

Gold Brau Brewing Company was a prominent alternate operating trade name used by the Canadian Ace Brewing Company of Chicago, Illinois. Operating out of a large facility at 3901 South Emerald Avenue on Chicago's South Side—originally the historic Manhattan Brewing Company plant—Canadian Ace established a massive contract packaging and private-label enterprise. By registering and utilizing fictitious brewing entities like Gold Brau, the company supplied house brands, regional labels, and specialty brews to grocery chains and distributors throughout the Midwest and South. As post-war consolidation intensified and shipping breweries dominated national market share, Canadian Ace ceased operations in the late 1960s.

For breweriana enthusiasts, cans issued under Chicago's post-war contract breweries offer a fascinating look into mid-century packaging and distribution strategies. The ABC Premium Ale can is particularly sought after by collectors of Illinois breweriana, metallic finishes, and those seeking to assemble paired beer and ale display sets from the classic flat top era.
