The Acme Beer flat top can, produced for Acme in San Francisco, California, represents a cornerstone artifact of West Coast brewing history. Emerging as a dominant regional power following the repeal of Prohibition, Acme captured a major share of the California market and became one of the earliest Pacific Coast breweries to embrace canned distribution.

Manufacturing and the "Keglet"

Acme partnered with the Pacific Can Company to package its beer. Early containers prominently displayed Pacific Can's trademarked "Keglet" moniker along the side panel, accompanied by promotional copy asserting that the container was exclusive to the brand. A notable manufacturing curiosity among the earliest canning runs was the use of grooved "soup can" end lids. Because Pacific Can had not yet prepared dedicated flat beer can lids when canning commenced, factory lines sealed the initial batches using standard food can lids featuring an inner pressure bead.

Regulatory Changes and Slogans

The can's front and side panels document notable shifts in mid-century beverage marketing and federal regulation. Early issues carried the mandatory Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statement along the seam. In an ambitious promotional push, certain production runs boldly proclaimed the beer to be "Dietetically Non-Fattening" directly on the face of the can.
