Acme Breweries of San Francisco produced one of the most recognizable and widely collected regional cans on the West Coast. Following the repeal of Prohibition, the brewery rapidly expanded to become a dominant force in California brewing, claiming a major share of the regional packaged beer market.

Pacific Can Company and the "Keglet"

To bring their canned beer to market, Acme partnered closely with the Pacific Can Company. Early containers manufactured through this partnership carried Pacific Can's trademarked "Keglet" designation. During the earliest manufacturing runs, Pacific Can had not yet prepared dedicated flat beer can lids, leading the production line to seal early batches using standard soup can lids characterized by an inner pressure bead.

Regulatory Claims and Marketing

Acme was renowned for ambitious advertising campaigns across California, including aerial neon signage and aggressive promotional campaigns. One of the most famous label details appeared when Acme added the claim "Dietetically Non-Fattening" to the can face. This bold marketing claim drew the attention of federal regulatory authorities, who instructed the brewery to drop the wording from subsequent production runs.

Notable Variations

Collectors recognize several variations across the lifespan of the Acme flat top. These include shifts between bold red and black background color schemes, mandatory tax markings such as Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statements, and subsequent transitions to "Gold Label" branding. The can remains an essential representation of San Francisco's mid-century brewing heritage.
