Alpen Brau Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Potosi's Alpen Brau Tab Top Can

The Alpen Brau Beer 12 oz can represents an interesting chapter in mid-century American regional brewing, issued under the trade name Alpen Brau Brewing Company in Potosi, Wisconsin. The imprint was operated as an alias division by the historic Potosi Brewing Company, an established brewery founded along the Mississippi River bluffs in 1852. Like several mid-sized regional breweries of its era, Potosi marketed various specialty and regional labels under dedicated DBA company names to cater to different market segments.

Graphic Design and Aesthetics

The visual presentation of the can leans heavily into Germanic and Alpine themes. The label prominently features stylized mountain peaks in the background, set against contrasting bands of color and traditional typography. This mountainous motif was designed to evoke cold-filtered European brewing traditions, aligning with the Bavarian-inspired name Alpen Brau.

Production and Collector Variations

Produced primarily on straight-sided steel bodies by container manufacturers such as the American Can Company, this label was distributed throughout regional Midwestern markets. In the breweriana hobby, multiple variations of this specific can are known to exist. These variations typically exhibit minor differences in mandatory regulatory text, alcohol statements, font weights, and manufacturer hallmarks.

Breweriana Significance

Potosi containers remain a cornerstone of Wisconsin breweriana collecting. Today, the town of Potosi is widely celebrated within the collecting community as the home of the National Brewery Museum, making cans produced by the original Potosi brewing facility prized additions to regional collections.
