Alt Heidelberg Du Feine Beer Flat Top Can

Alt Heidelberg Du Feine Overview

The Alt Heidelberg Du Feine can is a prominent Pacific Northwest breweriana artifact issued by Columbia Breweries, Inc. of Tacoma, Washington. Originally established by German brewmaster Emil Kliese and partner William C. Kiltz, the brewery made Alt Heidelberg its primary flagship brand. Following the repeal of Prohibition, the company became an early adopter of canning technology in the region.

This specific design is known for incorporating the traditional German phrase "Du Feine" across the face panel. The phrasing references the celebrated nineteenth-century German poem and student song by Joseph Victor von Scheffel, "Alt Heidelberg, du feine, du Stadt an Ehren reich" ("Old Heidelberg, you fine city rich in honor"). Incorporating the line served as a nod to the traditional German brewing roots that shaped the brewery's founding identity.

Subsequent label iterations from Columbia Breweries transitioned away from the poetic phrasing, replacing "Du Feine" with standard commercial text such as "Brand" or "Guest". As a result, this particular layout represents a specific era in the brewery's graphic history.

Variations of the can are known to exist among collectors, featuring differences in side-panel mandatory text, manufacturer stamps, and patent designations. It stands as a significant piece of Tacoma brewing history and a classic example of regional graphic styling from Columbia Breweries.
