Alta Extra Light Pilsener Beer 16 Oz Tab Top Can

Alta Extra Light 16 Oz Tab Top

The Alta Extra Light Pilsener Beer 16 Oz Tab Top Can represents a notable chapter in the packaging history of the Blitz-Weinhard Brewing Company in Portland, Oregon. Distributed throughout the Pacific Northwest, the Alta brand was produced during an era of significant transition for regional breweries responding to shifting consumer demand toward lighter pilseners and expanded can formats.

Can Overview and Collector Significance

Packaged in the half-quart (16-ounce) tall format, this can features bold "Alta" lettering across the main label, framed with clean line art and prominent text proclaiming it an extra light pilsener. The 16-ounce volume provided Blitz-Weinhard a competitive option for taverns, sporting venues, and retail shelves alongside their flagship lines.

Within breweriana collecting circles, 16-ounce tab top cans from Pacific Northwest regional breweries are especially prized due to their lower production volumes compared to standard 12-ounce packaging. Because Blitz-Weinhard served primarily a regional market, surviving pint cans of specialty and economy lines like Alta have become prominent display pieces for collectors focusing on Oregon brewing heritage.

Label Variations and Brewery History

Collectors have documented label variations across production batches of the Alta 16-ounce can. These differences include adjustments to mandatory brewery statements, text coloration, and the presence or absence of universal product codes on the side panels.

Brewed at the historic Blitz-Weinhard plant on Burnside Street in downtown Portland—one of the oldest commercial brewing locations in the American West—this can reflects the prolific canning output of the facility before regional consolidation altered the Pacific Northwest brewing landscape.
