Altes Golden Lager Beer 16 Oz Zip Top Can

Detroit's Altes Golden Lager Pint

The Altes Golden Lager 16 oz zip top can represents a significant chapter in Detroit brewing history under the ownership of the National Brewing Company. Originally established by Detroit's Tivoli Brewing Company, the Altes brand grew into a staple of Michigan's industrial-era beer culture, famously sponsoring broadcasts for both the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions. After National acquired the historic Mack Avenue brewery, production continued locally with the iconic brand identity intact.

This 16-ounce tall boy format is particularly prized among regional breweriana enthusiasts. The can's graphics showcase the bold Altes script over vibrant red and gold labeling, prominently highlighting the German-inspired "Fassbier" draft-style designation. Pint-sized cans from the Detroit facility were issued in far smaller quantities than standard twelve-ounce packages, making them a standout find on collector shelves.

Known variations exist among surviving examples, differing in seam construction, mandatory brewery statements, and copyright layout markings. As an authentic artifact of Detroit's mid-century brewing landscape, this can remains a treasured piece of Motor City history.
