Altes Golden Lager Beer Flat Top Can

Detroit's Golden Lager Heritage

This 12-ounce flat top can represents a classic mid-century packaging era for Altes Golden Lager Beer, produced by The National Brewing Co. of Michigan in Detroit. Characterized by metallic gold bands bordering the top and bottom rims against a rich red background, the face features a light cream oval framing the flowing red "Altes" script alongside stylized "Golden Lager" lettering. The perimeter of the central oval displays mandatory text indicating the beer was brewed and packed at the Detroit facility along with the standard net contents declaration.

Originally launched by Detroit’s Tivoli Brewing Company, Altes established itself as an enduring staple of the Motor City's local culture. The brand gained immense popularity across Michigan, prompting Tivoli to officially rename itself the Altes Brewing Company in 1948. Promoted heavily throughout the Great Lakes region, Altes became synonymous with Detroit sports through high-profile broadcast sponsorships of the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions. Memorable marketing campaigns crafted by advertising firm W. B. Doner & Co. cemented its local identity, featuring beloved city-centric anthems celebrating Detroit pride.

In 1954, Baltimore-based National Brewing Company acquired Altes Brewing Company to anchor its Midwestern expansion, reorganizing operations as The National Brewing Co. of Michigan at the Mack Avenue plant. While National briefly attempted to emphasize its own National Bohemian label in the market, deep consumer loyalty ensured Altes remained in active production. The Detroit facility continued packaging Altes alongside other company labels until shifting market dynamics and industry-wide consolidation led to the plant's closure in 1973.

For breweriana enthusiasts, this flat top can holds particular significance as an artifact of Detroit's storied brewing landscape. It captures a transitional period when historic regional favorites were integrated into expanding national brewing networks. Known variations exist featuring subtle differences in rim band styling, seam designs, and mandatory text layouts, making this design a popular focus for Great Lakes breweriana collectors.
