Altes Golden Lager Beer Flat Top Can

Altes Golden Lager from Detroit

The Altes Golden Lager flat top can represents a significant piece of Michigan brewing heritage, produced by the National Brewing Company in Detroit. The Altes brand originated with Detroit's historic Tivoli Brewing Company before operating as the Altes Brewing Company and eventually joining the portfolio of the National Brewing Company of Michigan.

Throughout its mid-century heyday, Altes was a powerhouse regional brand across the Midwest, widely recognized as a prominent sponsor of both the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions. Its packaging became an iconic sight across Michigan sports stadiums, social clubs, and neighborhood gatherings.

The can design is characterized by its vivid red backdrop framed with rich gold bands along the rims and crisp, bold lettering. Collectors appreciate the detailed lithography that highlights the classic "Altes Golden Lager" script alongside metallic trim.

Collectors track known variations of this can, which feature differences in seam markings, placement of the Keglined trademark, metallic gold accents, and manufacturer codes from suppliers such as the American Can Company and Continental Can Company. The can remains a prized centerpiece for collectors specializing in Detroit breweriana and Great Lakes regional brewing history.
