Altes Lager Beer Crowntainer

Tivoli's Altes Lager Crowntainer

The Altes Lager Beer Crowntainer was packaged by the Tivoli Brewing Company of Detroit, Michigan. As the flagship label for the historic Mack Avenue brewery, Altes was deeply woven into the fabric of Detroit's industrial workforce and regional culture.

Manufactured by the Crown Cork & Seal Company, the container allowed Tivoli to distribute canned beer while utilizing existing bottling line machinery. The can's graphics showcase traditional mid-century brewing motifs, featuring bold lettering, ornate decorative framing, and prominent branding across the face.

Collectors recognize several distinct variations across production runs of the Altes Crowntainer. The label design was issued on both metallic silver finishes and bright yellow enamel backgrounds. Other known differences include adjustments in mandatory legal text—such as the presence of Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) designations and varying alcohol content statements—alongside a well-documented typographical error variation appearing in the side panel text.

Today, the Altes Crowntainer remains an essential piece of Detroit brewing history and a popular staple among regional breweriana collectors.
