Altes Lager Beer Crowntainer

Altes Lager Detroit Crowntainer

The Altes Lager Beer Crowntainer is a prominent piece of Midwestern breweriana produced by Altes (operating earlier as the Tivoli Brewing Company) in Detroit, Michigan. Centered on Mack Avenue on Detroit's east side, Altes was deeply intertwined with the city's automotive boom and industrial workforce.

Design and Lithography

The can showcases classic mid-century graphic styling with prominent Altes typography and brewery insignia. Known releases feature distinct background color schemes, ranging from vibrant yellow-and-green artwork to radiant metallic silver finishes. The body also features period-specific elements, such as Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statements and taglines like "Aged-in Sealed-in Flavor".

Known Variations

Collectors actively document multiple variations of this container:

• Brewery Mandatories: Examples exist reflecting the corporate transition from the Tivoli Brewing Company to the Altes Brewing Company name.
• The "Customery" Typo: A widely recognized variation features a factory typographical error on the side panel text, where the word customary is misspelled as customery.
• Mandatory & Alcohol Statements: Variations display differences in warranty clauses (such as "assures" versus "guarantees"), alcohol content disclosures, and copyright markings.

Collector Significance

As one of Detroit's legacy brewing powerhouses alongside Stroh's, Goebel, and Pfeiffer, Altes maintained a massive presence in local sports sponsorships and taprooms throughout the region. Today, this container stands as an essential artifact of Michigan's rich brewing and packaging heritage.
