Altes Sportsman Ale Flat Top Can

Altes Sportsman Trivia Ale Can

Issued in 1954 by the Altes Brewing Company of Detroit, Michigan, the Altes Sportsman Ale series represents one of the most famous regional trivia sets in mid-century breweriana. During the 1950s craze for novelty and interactive quiz cans, Altes packaged its ale in cans densely printed with horizontal lines of sports statistics, outdoor lore, and state history separated by stars.

This specific version is identified by its notable reference to baseball legend Ty Cobb and his peak .420 batting average achieved in 1911 with the Detroit Tigers. Surrounding this baseball milestone are lines of eclectic regional trivia and outdoor notes. Visible entries on the can include references to Detroit Olympia's seating capacity, host Mort Neff's television program Michigan Outdoors, Castle Rock near St. Ignace, and camping in national forests, accompanied by the United States Brewers Foundation slogan, "Beer and Ale Belong!"

Because the brand used a standard red-and-gold front emblem across the run while rotating the fact panels on the body, hunting down all variations within the Altes Sportsman Ale series is widely considered one of the most difficult challenges for set collectors. Different text groupings and manufacturer codes appear across the run, making these mid-century Detroit cans enduring favorites among Great Lakes breweriana collectors.
