American Beer served as the premier flagship label for the revitalized brewery following the end of Prohibition. Wiessner’s enterprise flourished, prompting the 1887 construction of a massive, castle-like Teutonic and High Victorian brewhouse that became one of the city's architectural landmarks. The Wiessner family shuttered operations upon the onset of Prohibition in 1920. In 1931, the property was acquired by the American Malt Company, which modernized the equipment and relaunched production after repeal in 1933 as American Brewery, Inc. The operation grew into one of Maryland's largest independent breweries, but like many regional brewers, it was eventually outcompeted by national shipping breweries and ceased production in 1973.
