American Dry Extra Premium Beer 16 Oz Zip Top Can

Five Star American Dry 16 Oz Can

The American Dry Extra Premium Beer 16 oz zip top can represents a notable mid-century East Coast breweriana artifact issued under the Five Star Brewing Company label out of New York, New York. Five Star was a trade name associated with Manhattan's historic Jacob Ruppert Brewing Company, utilized to market regional value-oriented and specialty packaged lines.

Design and Brewery Background

Bearing clean graphic elements, the American Dry label prominently displays bold typography paired with star motifs and metallic highlights. The packaging emphasizes its "Extra Premium" branding, a common marketing strategy during the mid-century era as metropolitan breweries competed for shelf space against rising national shipping brands. The Five Star moniker allowed Jacob Ruppert to distribute diverse product tiers across the greater New York market and adjacent mid-Atlantic territories.

Collector Significance and Variations

For collectors of 16-ounce tall-boy containers, this half-quart release is noteworthy due to its relatively short distribution window. While American Dry also appeared in smaller standard formats and flat tops, the 16 oz zip top captures the transition period toward self-opening can ends fitted to large-format steel bodies.

Collectors recognize variations across the production history of the American Dry brand, including differences in mandatory text formatting, alternate phrasing for the liquid measurement (such as "Contents One Full Pint" markings), and subtle shifts in ink application. Because 16-ounce cans were produced in lower volume than standard sizes, this pint-sized can remains a popular target among New York brewery specialists and odd-size can enthusiasts.
