Aone (lancer's) Ale Flat Top Can

Arizona Brewing A-1 Lancers Ale

This mid-1950s flat top container represents a notable chapter in southwestern brewing history, showcasing Arizona Brewing Company's A-1 Ale. The face of the can features an oval crest depicting an armored knight on horseback carrying a pennant emblazoned with the word "Lancers". Encircling the crest is the brewery statement from Phoenix, Arizona, alongside the lower label assurance declaring the ale "Guaranteed Top Fermented".

Arizona Brewing introduced the A-1 brand during the 1940s, and it quickly blossomed into the state's dominant flagship label, affectionately dubbed the "Arizona Bud" by locals and marketed with the memorable regional slogan, "The Western Way to Say Welcome". While the flagship lager utilized eagle imagery in its early years, A-1 Ale served as the debut vehicle in the mid-1950s for the knight motif and the "Lancers" name—a direct homage to brewery president Joseph F. Lanser. The knight design eventually expanded across the broader product line after disputes arose over eagle trademarks with national competitors.

Founded on East Madison Street in Phoenix shortly after the repeal of Prohibition in 1933 by brothers Martin and Herman Fenster, the Arizona Brewing Company stood as the state's lone surviving commercial brewery from the era. Under the stewardship of Lanser and partner Herb Lindner, the brewery expanded significantly through the post-World War II boom. Facing fierce pricing pressure from emerging national brewing conglomerates, the family-operated facility was eventually acquired by the Carling Brewing Company in 1964, marking the end of its run as an independent regional concern.

For breweriana enthusiasts, this flat top stands out as a prime artifact of Arizona's post-Prohibition brewing heritage. Mid-century ales from the Desert Southwest are relatively uncommon compared to lagers, making the vibrant green Lancers design a prized centerpiece among regional and flat top can collectors alike.
