Arrow English Style Ale Flat Top Can

Arrow English Style Ale Flat Top

The Arrow English Style Ale flat top container stands as one of the most celebrated artifacts from Baltimore's storied brewing heritage. Produced by The Globe Brewing Company from its South Hanover Street facility—a brewery location tracing its operational history back to the mid-18th century—the can was filled under Globe's prominent post-Prohibition Arrow label.

Manufactured by the American Can Company, the container incorporates early "Keglined" trademark text and patent-pending notations along its side panel. Collector interest is heightened by the specific mandatory information printed on the lithograph, notably the Maryland permit designation "Permit Number MD. U-401" and the brewery's New York licensed office address at 60 East 42nd Street. The visual design integrates traditional English ale styling with the recognizable Arrow brand motif.

Within breweriana circles, this can is renowned as an extraordinary scarcity, representing one of the most elusive pre-World War II cans issued in the Mid-Atlantic region. While variations exist across the broader Arrow canning line in terms of mandatory wording and state tax markings, this specific English Style Ale version is documented in only a tiny handful of surviving institutional and private collections.
