Brewery Background

Wilkes-Barre held a prominent place in American regional brewing throughout the twentieth century, serving as an industrial hub for beer production. Operating facilities in the city frequently utilized distinct trade and subsidiary names—such as Pocono Brewing Co.—to produce house labels, supermarket contracts, and value brands. The Astor Home brand catered to local and regional markets seeking standard premium beer during an era when canned beer dominated tavern and retail distribution.

Label Design and Visual Elements

The Astor Home Premium Beer can features a classic graphic layout designed for immediate shelf recognition. The face of the can is dominated by the bold 'Astor Home' title typography accompanied by prominent 'Premium Beer' text. Traditional heraldic crest detailing and contrasting colored banner accents give the design a quintessential Pennsylvania regional look. Mandatory canning text situated along the seam and side panels identifies Pocono in Wilkes-Barre, PA, offering crucial provenance for can historians.

Collector Significance

Among breweriana collectors specializing in Pennsylvania regional breweries, the Astor Home can is an interesting piece documenting the area's secondary and contract label history. Because regional brands were typically marketed within targeted geographic areas rather than nationwide, they represent a distinct chapter of northeastern Pennsylvania's packaging heritage. Variations exist across different production runs, exhibiting subtle differences in mandatory legal text, seam execution, and color tones.
