Atlas Prager Extra Dry Beer Flat Top Can

Atlas Prager Extra Dry Beer Can

The Atlas Prager Extra Dry Beer Flat Top Can represents a notable piece of mid-century Chicago brewing history. Produced for the Atlas Brewing Company of Chicago, Illinois, this container was part of the packaging lineage for the brewery's flagship "Atlas Prager" brand.

Brewery Heritage and Significance

Atlas Brewing Company traced its roots back to 1891 when it was established as the Bohemian Brewing Company by Charles J. Vopicka, Otto Kubin, and John Kralovec, before adopting the Atlas name in 1896. Following the repeal of Prohibition, Atlas made headlines by securing the very first federal permit issued to resume brewing operations in the Northern District of Illinois. Atlas Prager became widely recognized across the Midwest, heavily supported through high-profile regional advertising, radio programs, and the popular tagline "Got It? Get It!"

Design and Manufacturing Variations

The Atlas Prager Extra Dry can features a metallic gold, red, and silver lithographed label. The artwork showcases the recognizable Atlas shield insignia and incorporates a "Slow-Brewed" banner running along the front display.

For collectors of breweriana, several variations exist across production runs. Cans were manufactured by different container suppliers, including Cans Inc., National Can Company, and American Can Company. Minor differences in mandatory canning text, patent notices, and lithography marks distinguish the known variants produced during the label's run.

Historical Context

During the post-war era of industry consolidation, Atlas merged with the Schoenhofen-Edelweiss Brewing Company and was later acquired by Drewrys. The original Chicago packaging operations ceased in the 1960s, making surviving cans from the local facility enduring artifacts of the city's commercial canning era.
