Ballantine Genuine Draft 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Ballantine Genuine Draft Can

The Ballantine Genuine Draft 12 oz tab top can documents an important transition period in American brewing history following the acquisition of P. Ballantine & Sons by the Falstaff Brewing Corporation. After production ceased at Ballantine's historic Newark, New Jersey facility, Falstaff shifted manufacturing of the brand to its regional brewery network, with the Cranston, Rhode Island plant serving as a primary hub for distribution across the Northeast.

This container reflects an industry-wide push by major domestic brewers to market packaged draft-style beers to off-premise consumers in standard retail packaging. The corporate era behind this can also gained wider prominence in American legal history through the landmark contract dispute Bloor v. Falstaff Brewing Corp. (1978), a foundational case in contract law addressing best-efforts clauses and the marketing commitments Falstaff owed to the acquired Ballantine label.

The graphic design retains classic Ballantine branding elements, showcasing the trademark three interlocking Borromean rings—representing Purity, Body, and Flavor—paired with bold draft labeling and mandatory text identifying the Falstaff Brewing Corporation in Cranston, Rhode Island. For collectors, known variations exist across production runs, featuring differences in metal compositions, side seam fabrication, and the roster of brewing locations listed across the mandatory panel.
