Ballantine P 43 Reunion Can

Princeton '43 Commemorative Can

The Ballantine P 43 Reunion Can was produced by P. Ballantine & Sons of Newark, New Jersey, as a special commemorative container for Princeton University alumni celebrating the Class of 1943.

Historical Context

Throughout the mid-20th century, P. Ballantine & Sons established a strong relationship with regional universities and alumni associations, most notably Princeton University. During annual reunion weekends, the brewery supplied custom-printed cans and drinking vessels emblazoned with class numerals and collegiate emblems. The "P 43" designation denotes the Princeton University graduating class of 1943.

These commemorative vessels typically incorporated the university's tiger motif or class numerals alongside Ballantine's famous three interlocking rings trademark, which represented "Purity, Body, and Flavor." Unlike commercial packaging meant for supermarket shelves and taverns, reunion cans were distributed directly at private alumni gatherings and tent parties on campus.

Collector Significance

Reunion cans issued by Ballantine hold a distinct place in breweriana collecting because they bridge the gap between historic brewing advertising and Ivy League memorabilia. Produced in limited runs strictly for event attendees, they were rarely saved in large numbers after the festivities concluded. Variations exist among reunion issues, reflecting different production runs and class anniversaries. Today, the Ballantine P 43 can remains a notable artifact of New Jersey brewing heritage and mid-century collegiate tradition.
