Ballantine's Xxx Ale Flat Top Can

Ballantine's XXX Ale Flat Top

Produced by P. Ballantine & Sons in Newark, New Jersey, the Ballantine's XXX Ale flat top can is one of the most recognizable containers in American breweriana. Adorned with the brewery's trademark three interlocking rings representing "Purity, Body, and Flavor"—a motif inspired by the overlapping wet rings left by glassware—the label prominently features the traditional "XXX" markings historically used by brewers to designate strength and quality.

The can's metallic copper-toned finish served as a defining aesthetic. P. Ballantine & Sons defended this visual presentation aggressively, taking legal action against the Genesee Brewing Company during the 1930s over the use of a competing copper-colored design.

Beyond the brewing industry, the can achieved a celebrated place in modern art history. In 1960, pop artist Jasper Johns immortalized the Ballantine Ale can in his famous sculpture Painted Bronze, cementing the graphic design as a mid-century American cultural emblem.

Breweriana collectors actively document multiple variations across manufacturing runs. Known variations include cans featuring opening instructions, versions bearing Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statutory text, and differences in distributor and brewery address lines, as well as subtle adjustments to the copper shading and trademark typography.
