Ballantine's Xxx Ale Flat Top Can

The Iconic Ballantine XXX Ale Can

Produced by Ballantine & Son's in Newark, New Jersey, the Ballantine's XXX Ale flat top represents an indelible hallmark in American breweriana. Featuring a signature copper-toned metallic body and the famous Borromean interlocking rings—symbolizing "Purity, Body, and Flavor"—the design is among the most celebrated in twentieth-century packaging. The brewery's three rings reportedly originated from the pattern of damp rings left by glassware on a wooden table, while the bold "XXX" lettering honors traditional cask markings historically used to denote strength and quality.

The visual presence of the can even spurred historic legal conflicts. Ballantine & Son's vigorously defended their distinctive copper metallic trade dress, pursuing litigation against rival brewers who released similar copper-finished cans. Beyond commercial store shelves, the container achieved widespread recognition in fine art when Pop artist Jasper Johns cast and hand-painted a pair of Ballantine Ale cans for his renowned 1960 sculpture, Painted Bronze.

For breweriana enthusiasts, this can offers an engaging focus for study due to numerous manufacturing shifts. Collectors track variations that include cans bearing the Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statutory statement versus post-IRTP issues, versions manufactured with opening instruction panels, differing distributor and address text, varied alcohol statement markings, and slight alterations in the metallic copper pigmentation and trademark lettering.
