Ballantine's Xxx Ale Flat Top Can

Ballantine XXX Ale Flat Top History

Produced by P. Ballantine & Sons in Newark, New Jersey, the Ballantine XXX Ale flat top can is one of the most recognizable graphic designs in American breweriana. The can features a signature metallic copper-bronze background adorned with the brewery's trademark three interlocking Borromean rings representing "Purity, Body, and Flavor". According to brewing lore, founder Peter Ballantine conceived the ring motif after observing the overlapping damp rings left by drinking glasses on a wooden table.

The prominent "XXX" marking on the label references traditional brewing heritage, where cellar masters marked casks with chalk to denote strength and quality grading. Ballantine retained this classic emblem for its flagship ale, making the bold lettering a central element of the can's front face.

P. Ballantine & Sons closely guarded the visual presentation of this can. The brewery aggressively defended its branding in court, even pursuing trademark litigation against the Genesee Brewing Company over their use of a similar metallic copper can design.

The can also earned a permanent place in modern art history. In 1960, Pop artist Jasper Johns cast and hand-painted a pair of Ballantine Ale cans for his famous sculpture Painted Bronze, cementing the container's status as a quintessential piece of mid-century American culture.

Over its production history, the can was manufactured with several variations. Collectors document examples bearing Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statutory markings, versions featuring opening instruction panels, and subtle shifts in distributor text, corporate copyright script, and metallic tones across different canning runs.
