Ballantine's XXX Ale Quart

Ballantine's XXX Ale Quart

P. Ballantine & Sons of Newark, New Jersey, produced this prominent large-format container for its flagship top-fermented ale. Often referred to in period promotional campaigns and breweriana circles as the "Bumper" quart, the container was manufactured under Continental Can Company's Cap-Sealed design.

The label presentation features Ballantine's Borromean rings trademark—three interlocking golden circles representing "Purity, Body, and Flavor." Legend holds that brewery founder Peter Ballantine conceived the emblem after observing the overlapping wet rings left by drinking glasses on a table. The bold "XXX" designation draws from traditional brewing nomenclature, where stamped X-marks historically indicated higher strength and quality standards.

Ballantine actively promoted the 32-ounce quart as a sharing package alongside high-profile media partnerships, notably their sponsorship of New York Yankees baseball broadcasts where home runs were dubbed "Ballantine Blasts." Because quart containers required dedicated packaging lines and were manufactured in smaller runs than standard sizes, they hold a distinct place in Mid-Atlantic brewing history.

Several variations of this quart can exist across its manufacturing runs. Known variants include commemorative releases celebrating the 1939 New York World's Fair, centennial editions carrying the "1840–1940" imprint, and different iterations featuring Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statements, side-panel distributor designations, and minor text adjustments along the seam.
