Banner Extra Dry Premium Beer Flat Top Can

Burkhardt Banner Flat Top Can

The Banner Extra Dry Premium Beer Flat Top Can was produced by the Burkhardt Brewing Company of Akron, Ohio. Burkhardt holds a prominent place in American industrial history, having operated as Akron's longest-running brewery. Following the death of founder Wilhelm Burkhardt in the late nineteenth century, the brewery was expanded under the leadership of his widow, Margaretha Burkhardt, making it one of the earliest prominent woman-led commercial brewing operations in the United States.

The can design reflects mid-century trends in commercial packaging, emphasizing the "Extra Dry" and "Premium Beer" designations that gained widespread popularity in the post-World War II era. The artwork showcases bold banner typography and a clean mid-century color palette, with containers manufactured by major suppliers like the Continental Can Company.

Among breweriana enthusiasts, this can represents the culmination of Burkhardt's independent canning history before the business was acquired by the Burger Brewing Company of Cincinnati. Multiple variations of the Banner label exist, featuring subtle differences in mandatory text and graphic layouts across different production runs. It stands as a significant artifact of northeastern Ohio's regional brewing legacy.
