Bavarian Type Beer Quart

Mount Carbon Bavarian Type Quart

Hailing from Pottsville, Pennsylvania, the Mount Carbon Brewery produced the Bavarian Type Beer Quart as a standout offering for consumers across Schuylkill County and the greater Anthracite region. Operating under the long-standing slogan "A Mellow Brew from the Mountains," Mount Carbon built a loyal regional following that fiercely rivaled larger regional competitors.

Graphic Design and Heraldry

The quart-format can presents classic mid-century breweriana artwork centered on German-inspired heraldry and bold title lettering. Designed to emphasize traditional Old World brewing heritage, the graphics prominently display the "Bavarian Type Beer" branding alongside stylized crests and regional brewery identification. The large surface area of the quart package allowed the brewery's vibrant color palette and distinctive typography to stand out vividly on store shelves and tavern backbars.

Notable Variations

Collectors track several variations across production runs of this quart can. Notable differences include examples featuring mandatory Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) phrasing alongside post-IRTP versions issued after federal labeling requirements shifted. Additional variations encompass subtle modifications to the mandatory legal text, side-panel brewery disclosures, and minor layout adjustments from different container manufacturers.

Collector Legacy

Mount Carbon Brewery remained an independent fixture in Pottsville brewing until the late twentieth century, when brand rights were acquired by neighboring D. G. Yuengling & Son. Large-format quart cans from Mount Carbon continue to be prized centerpieces among collectors specializing in Pennsylvania breweriana and regional coal-country brewing history.
