Becker's Mellow Beer Flat Top Can

Becker's Mellow Flat Top Can

The Becker's Mellow Beer flat top can represents a notable chapter in the brewing heritage of the Intermountain West, produced by the Becker Products Company of Ogden, Utah. Established by the Becker family in the late nineteenth century, the company operated as one of Utah's longest-running and most influential independent brewing enterprises.

Packaged during the mid-twentieth-century canning era, the Becker's Mellow flat top was manufactured in both 12-ounce and 11-ounce sizes. Containers produced by the American Can Company featured the prominent "Keglined" trademark along the side panels alongside regulatory information. Because Becker distributed across several western states with distinct liquor control laws, cans were issued with various lid stampings and text disclosures, including mandatory state-specific statements such as "Does Not Contain More Than 3.2% Alcohol by Weight."

Collectors track different variations across the production lifespan of the label, characterized by shifts in can manufacturer plant codes, fluid volume indications, alcohol statement placements, and side-panel layouts. Beyond canning at the home brewery in Ogden, the brand also saw regional packaging partnerships, including production associated with Denver's historic Tivoli Brewing Company to service broader Rocky Mountain distribution routes.

The can remains an important centerpiece of Utah brewing history and mid-century graphic design, standing as a lasting relic of regional Western brewing prior to the Becker brewery's closure in the 1960s.
