Becker's Mellow Beer Flat Top Can

Becker's Mellow Beer Flat Top

Produced by the Becker Products Company in Ogden, Utah, the Becker's Mellow Beer flat top stands as a prominent artifact from one of the Intermountain West's most enduring regional breweries. Founded in 1892 by German immigrant John Stephan Becker alongside his sons Gustav and Albert, the Becker brewery overcame Utah's strict local alcohol regulations and the Prohibition era, remaining in operation until the mid-1960s.

The can design reflects the mid-century aesthetic associated with the Becker portfolio, centered on the bold "Becker's Mellow" branding. Becker Products distributed heavily throughout Utah, Idaho, Nevada, and surrounding western territories under regional marketing campaigns that proudly declared, "Out West It's Beckers".

For can collectors, the Becker's Mellow flat top holds particular historical interest due to differing variations produced across canning runs. Variations include cans manufactured by different container companies—such as the American Can Company and Pacific Can Company—as well as differing volume designations, including twelve-ounce and eleven-ounce releases. Additional variations display differing text placements for mandatory state-level alcohol statements, which occasionally appeared on the top lid rather than the side panels to comply with varying western liquor laws.

The Becker brand legacy has also made modern news headlines. Decades after Becker Products shuttered its Ogden facility in 1964, the family name and historic marks—including Becker's Mellow—became the subject of federal trademark litigation when descendants sued modern craft brewers over the unauthorized commercial use of the historic brand assets. Surviving cans from the Ogden facility remain significant records of Utah's industrial and brewing heritage.
