Bel Air Premium Beer 12 Oz Zip Top Can

Horlacher's Bel Air Premium Can

Bel Air Premium Beer is a 12-ounce can produced by the historic Horlacher Brewing Company of Allentown, Pennsylvania. Operating from its facility on Gordon Street, Horlacher established itself as a prominent regional brewer that supplemented its core portfolio by packaging proprietary and private-label brands for various regional distributors and retail businesses.

Contract Brewing and Distribution

Regional breweries frequently sustained production volume through contract canning agreements. Bel Air Premium Beer served as one such specialized label, canned for retail operations such as Home Liquors in Newark, New Jersey. This arrangement allowed regional retailers to offer an exclusive house brand while utilizing Horlacher's canning facilities in eastern Pennsylvania.

Graphic Design and Variations

The can features bold mid-century typography and classic graphical framing, highlighting the "Bel Air" name alongside the "Premium Beer" designation. Collectors have documented variations of the label across different production runs, with differences primarily appearing in the mandatory distribution text, brewery address phrasing, and the placement of can manufacturer logos near the seam.

Historical Context

Horlacher Brewing Company stood as an integral fixture of the Lehigh Valley brewing landscape from the late 19th century until its eventual closure in the late 1970s. Cans such as Bel Air Premium Beer document the brewery's active role in private-label packaging and remain representative artifacts of Pennsylvania's industrial brewing history.
