Berghoff 1887 Draft Flat Top Can

Berghoff 1887 Draft Beer Can

The Berghoff 1887 Draft flat top can represents a notable crossover in American brewing history, connecting a classic Midwestern label with the industrial brewing heritage of southern Colorado. While the Berghoff name originated in Fort Wayne, Indiana, rights and production for the brand expanded over the decades to other regional facilities, including the Walter Brewing Company of Pueblo, Colorado.

Walter Brewing Company Background

Established in Pueblo in the late 19th century, Walter Brewing Company grew to become a major regional presence in the Mountain West. As industry competition and market consolidation intensified throughout the mid-20th century, regional breweries often supplemented their core lineup with contract brewing and packaging. Walter produced Berghoff 1887 Draft alongside its own flagship brews, distributing the label throughout its regional market territory.

Graphic Elements and Variations

The can features bold mid-century typography centered around the heritage "1887" date and prominent draft beer callouts. Collectors have documented graphic variations across production runs, most notably in the color treatments used for the lettering and numerals, with differences found in the accent colors of the central branding.

Because Walter Brewing Company concluded operations in 1975, cans bearing the Pueblo, Colorado mandatory text remain celebrated artifacts of the city's storied brewing past.
