Berghoff Light Beer Flat Top Can

Berghoff Light Beer Flat Top

The Berghoff Light Beer Flat Top Can stands as a classic artifact of mid-century Midwestern brewing, hailing from the historic Berghoff Brewing Corporation in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Founded by brothers Herman, Henry, Hubert, and Gustav Berghoff in 1887, the brewery grew to become one of the premier beverage producers in the state of Indiana. The brand also enjoyed widespread fame through Herman Berghoff's celebrated Chicago dining establishment, which introduced generations of patrons to the family's brews.

Manufactured from steel by the Continental Can Company, this flat top container carried Berghoff's flagship light lager to households and taverns throughout the region. The can design features distinct mid-century commercial artwork, showcasing prominent Berghoff script and traditional German-style heraldic motifs that honored the founders' Dortmund heritage.

Berghoff flat top cans from Fort Wayne are notable among breweriana collectors for marking the era of Indiana regional brewing prior to the acquisition of the plant by the Falstaff Brewing Corporation in the mid-1950s. Multiple labeling variations exist from different canning runs, exhibiting subtle shifts in mandatory tax statement formatting, brewery signature text, and minor color palette adjustments. Because Berghoff was among the most prominent independent breweries in northeastern Indiana, this flat top serves as an essential centerpiece for collections celebrating Hoosier brewing heritage.
