Best Premium Quality Beer Flat Top Can

Best Premium Quality Flat Top

The Best Premium Quality Beer flat top can represents a notable chapter in the packaging heritage of the Cumberland Brewing Company of Cumberland, Maryland. Operating in Western Maryland's historic brewing hub on North Centre Street, Cumberland Brewing Company was one of the area's prominent regional producers, distributing both flagship lines and specialized proprietary labels.

Labeling and Graphic Design

The can showcases a classic mid-century aesthetic centered around bold "Best" typography accented by the "Premium Quality Beer" banner. The lithography utilizes clean background paneling, crisp framing borders, and traditional brewing heraldry designed for shelf visibility in competitive retail markets.

Known Variations

Variations of the Best Premium Quality flat top exist within breweriana collections. These variations primarily stem from differences in mandatory regulatory text, varying can manufacturer body-maker marks, and subtle changes in metallic paint applications across different production runs. Because the "Best" brand moniker was also used under license or independently by breweries in other states, the specific Cumberland, Maryland brewery credit line is the key distinguishing factor for collectors focused on Mid-Atlantic and Appalachian breweriana.

Historical Significance

Throughout the mid-20th century, Cumberland Brewing Company competed fiercely against its crosstown neighbor, the Queen City Brewing Company, as well as large national shipping breweries expanding into Maryland. Maintaining a diverse brand roster that included value and premium offerings like Best Beer allowed the brewery to maintain local tap and retail distribution until regional operations ultimately consolidated. Today, steel containers from Cumberland's canning lines remain desirable artifacts documenting Maryland's industrial brewing history.
