Bierman Beer Flat Top Can

Bierman Beer Flat Top History

The Bierman Beer flat top can represents a notable chapter in the rich industrial brewing heritage of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Produced by the Independent Milwaukee Brewery—a stalwart regional enterprise established in 1901 by Henry N. Bills and his associates—this can showcases mid-century Midwestern can manufacturing. While the brewery achieved its widest fame through its flagship Braumeister line, it marketed Bierman Beer as part of its diverse portfolio of regional offerings.

Manufactured by the American Can Company, the container features clean, era-specific commercial lithography and typography tailored for store displays and tavern coolers. Beyond the Independent Milwaukee Brewery releases, variations of the Bierman brand were also produced by other regional Wisconsin breweries, such as the Fox Head Brewing Company, featuring alternate background color schemes.

Independent Milwaukee Brewery operated from its South Side facility on 13th Street for decades before the company was eventually purchased by the G. Heileman Brewing Company. Because the Bierman label saw a narrower distribution and market life compared to mainstream national brews, specimens bearing the Independent Milwaukee Brewery mandatory line are standout additions to Wisconsin breweriana and regional canning history collections.
