Big Cat Stout Malt Liquor 12 Oz Zip Top Can

Pabst's Big Cat Stout Can

Pabst Brewing Company introduced the Big Cat brand during the height of the malt liquor boom in the 1960s to compete directly with market frontrunners such as Schlitz Malt Liquor and Colt 45. In keeping with the era's trend of utilizing predatory animal imagery to project strength and potency, Pabst adorned the can with a fierce black panther motif set against bold, high-contrast lettering.

This specific 12-ounce can carries the mandatory text indicating production at Pabst's Los Angeles, California packaging facility, which Pabst had acquired from the historic Los Angeles Brewing Company. The Los Angeles mandatory distinguishes this West Coast canning run from those produced at Pabst's Midwestern plants.

The prominent "STOUT" designation printed on the face of the can is among its most noteworthy attributes. While the vast majority of Big Cat cans were branded simply as "Malt Liquor," Pabst produced "Stout Malt Liquor" cans to comply with strict statutory labeling requirements in specific state markets, such as Minnesota, where state alcohol control laws mandated the stout classification for higher-strength malt beverages. Pabst similarly produced other state-specific variations, such as "Malt Lager" cans for distribution in certain southeastern markets.

Among collectors of vintage brewery packaging, the Big Cat Stout can with the Los Angeles mandatory is recognized as a considerably scarcer and more elusive find than the standard national malt liquor release. Across the entire Big Cat product line, collectors identify various packaging variations that differ by brewery location text, state-mandated wording, and specialized lid stampings.
