Big Mac Brand Beer Flat Top Can

Mackinac Bridge Tribute Can

The Big Mac Brand Beer flat top can is a celebrated regional issue produced by the Menominee-Marinette Brewing Company of Menominee, Michigan. Introduced in the late 1950s, the label was created to capitalize on the public excitement surrounding the completion of Michigan's Mackinac Bridge, widely nicknamed "Big Mac" or "Mighty Mac".

Historical Context and Design

Connecting Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas across the Straits of Mackinac, the suspension bridge was celebrated as a major engineering feat. Menominee-Marinette, operating on the border of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and northeastern Wisconsin, tied its packaging directly to this landmark. The can's face features a graphic illustration of the suspension bridge spanning open water, framed by bold mid-century typography and patriotic coloring.

Brewery History and Distribution

Menominee-Marinette Brewing Company was a small regional operation that primarily served local markets. The Big Mac brand had a very brief lifespan; shortly after its debut, changes in brewery ownership led to the brand being phased out in favor of other flagship labels. The brewery ceased all operations a few years later.

Because the brand saw limited distribution and was canned for only a short window, surviving examples are among the most sought-after mid-century cans from Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Variations exist across production runs, distinguished by minor differences in mandatory text labeling and can manufacturer markings.
