Billy Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

A Pop Culture Legend in Breweriana

The Billy Beer 12 oz tab top can from Falls City Brewing Company in Louisville, Kentucky, remains one of the most widely recognized novelty cans in breweriana history. Conceived during the administration of U.S. President Jimmy Carter, the brand was endorsed by the President's colorful younger brother, Billy Carter. Facing severe market pressure from national brewing giants, Falls City partnered with Carter to license his name and persona in a high-profile marketing effort.

The can prominently displays the bold red and orange "Billy Beer" logo, while the back features Carter's famous printed endorsement: "Brewed expressly for and with the personal approval of one of AMERICA's all-time Great Beer Drinkers—Billy Carter." Below this statement is a printed facsimile of his signature and a quote asserting that the recipe was created specifically for his personal preference.

Due to the intense media frenzy surrounding the Carter family, the release achieved instant pop culture status. Demand was initially so massive that Falls City contracted out production to regional brewing partners, resulting in variations across cans depending on the brewery credit and manufacturing plant.

When production ceased and Falls City ultimately shuttered its facility, rampant speculation gripped the collecting world. Widespread rumors and newspaper classifieds claimed these cans would rapidly appreciate into small fortunes, leading countless people across the country to stash away six-packs in attics, closets, and basements. Because millions of cans were produced and preserved rather than discarded, the can became one of the hobby's classic examples of perceived scarcity versus real-world market supply. Today, it remains an iconic symbol of late-1970s presidential politics and American pop culture history.
