Bilow Garden State Light Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Bilow Garden State Light Beer Can

This straight steel tab top can dates from the 1970s, an era defined by the introduction of dual volumetric liquid measurements displaying both "12 FL. OZS." and "354 ML" along the lower rim. The container features an eye-catching background pattern of radiating orange diagonal stripes framing a central green circular insignia accented with stylized barley ears.

Bilow Garden State Light Beer was developed as a proprietary house brand for the Bilow family's chain of discount liquor retail outlets in New Jersey. During the peak boom of breweriana collecting, proprietor Ludwig Bilow became an active patron and fixture within regional collector clubs and enthusiast conventions. Bilow leveraged his business to commission distinctive private-label cans and promotional issues that circulated widely among East Coast collectors and swap meets.

While the mandatory text identifies the Garden State Brewing Company of Hammonton, New Jersey, this entity served as an alternate trade name for the Eastern Brewing Corporation. Established in 1933 following the repeal of Prohibition under the original name Eastern Beverage Corporation, the Hammonton plant became well known for its contract packaging capabilities. As industry consolidation pushed many regional competitors out of business, Eastern Brewing endured for decades by operating under various trade names—including Garden State, Colonial, and Waukee—supplying house brands and budget-friendly labels to supermarkets and regional distributors before closing its doors around 1990.

For breweriana collectors, the Bilow Garden State Light can holds special significance as a piece of Garden State brewing history. It reflects a fascinating chapter where commercial contract brewing, regional retail enterprise, and the collecting community directly intersected. Label variations with differing stripe schemes and subtle layout adjustments continue to make this brand a favorite among Mid-Atlantic can enthusiasts.
