Black And White Lager Beer Flat Top Can

St. Claire Black and White Lager

The Black and White Lager Beer flat top was produced by the St. Claire Brewing Company of San Jose, California. Originating during the pre-World War II era of early canned beer production, this container represents a distinct chapter in northern California's regional brewing heritage.

Design and Aesthetics

True to its name, the can features a stark, high-contrast aesthetic dominated by a clean black-and-white color palette. Rather than relying on the intricate multi-color lithography commonly seen on contemporary cans of the era, the label design emphasizes bold typography and minimalist framing. The clean presentation was intended to maximize shelf visibility and brand recognition in retail displays.

Brewery History and Provenance

St. Claire Brewing Company operated out of San Jose for a relatively brief span in the post-Prohibition era before shuttering operations around the onset of World War II. Because the brewery was an independent regional producer with localized distribution throughout central and northern California, its surviving packaging artifacts remain heavily sought after by regional breweriana historians and West Coast can collectors.

Variations

Known variations exist among surviving examples of the Black and White Lager label. These differences primarily involve minor typographical shifts, factory copyright placements, and variations in mandatory federal regulatory phrasing—such as Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statutory markings required during the era.
