Black Label Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Carling Black Label Cleveland Can

The Carling Black Label 12-ounce tab top can issued out of Cleveland, Ohio, represents a major era for one of North America's most recognizable mid-century brewing powerhouses. The roots of Carling's presence in Cleveland trace back to the repeal of Prohibition, when Canadian Breweries executive E. P. Taylor partnered with James A. Bohannon. Bohannon repurposed the former Peerless Motor Car Company luxury automobile plant on Quincy Avenue into the Brewing Corporation of America, which officially became the Carling Brewing Company.

The Cleveland facility served as the operational headquarters and primary launchpad for Black Label's nationwide expansion. The can graphics prominently display the red, black, and white shield insignia, a design synonymous with the famous mid-century "Hey Mabel, Black Label!" advertising campaign that dominated television and print media.

For breweriana collectors, cans bearing the Cleveland mandatory line carry notable regional history, reflecting the central role the Ohio facility played before Carling relocated its central operations. Multiple variations of this can exist in the collecting community, showing subtle differences in mandatory text layout, multi-city brewery listings, and manufacturer markings from suppliers such as Continental Can Company and American Can Company.
