Black Label Beer 12 Oz Zip Top Can

Cleveland Black Label Zip Top

The Black Label Beer 12 oz zip top can produced by the Carling Brewing Company in Cleveland, Ohio, represents a defining chapter in mid-century American brewing and packaging history. Following the repeal of Prohibition, the company established its primary United States production footprint by converting the former Peerless Motor Car Company automotive plant on Quincy Avenue into a modern, high-capacity brewery.

During the era of the zip top closure, Carling surged into the upper echelon of American brewing giants, heavily propelled by the culturally famous "Hey Mabel, Black Label!" multimedia advertising campaign. Cans produced during this operational era showcase the brand's classic graphic livery: a bold black-and-white shield motif accented with vivid red banners and distinctive mid-century typography.

For breweriana collectors, Cleveland-issued cans offer notable text and graphic variations. As Carling expanded nationwide, the mandatory brewery location panels on the sides evolved to list various combinations of affiliated production plants across the country. Other variations include differing statutory tax statements, state mandatory alcohol notices, and manufacturer codes along the can seam.

The Quincy Avenue facility served as Carling's flagship domestic headquarters until operations ceased in the early 1970s, cementing cans bearing the Cleveland mandatory statement as key artifacts of Ohio's industrial brewing heritage.
