Blackhawk Topping Beer Quart

Blackhawk Topping Quart Cone Top

The Blackhawk Topping Beer Quart is a celebrated piece of Midwestern breweriana produced by the Blackhawk Brewing Company of Davenport, Iowa. Bearing the historic brewery slogan "A Famous Brew Since 1882," this container stands out for its bold graphic presentation and commanding large-format presence among Quad Cities breweriana.

Design and Iconography

The can showcases an eye-catching color scheme dominated by bold red, yellow, black, and white tones. The centerpiece of the label is an illustrated profile portrait of Sauk leader Chief Black Hawk adorned with feathers. Arcing across the front is the stylized "Topping Beer" brand lettering, framed by decorative borders alongside the Davenport brewery text.

Manufacturing and Variations

Manufactured using Continental Can Company's "Cap Sealed" construction, the container displays high-profile quart proportions. Extant specimens feature Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statements along with mandatory alcohol declarations, including "Alcohol Content Not Over 4% by Weight." Variations exist across surviving cans, primarily distinguished by differences in mandatory legal wording, alcohol statement text, and minor printing adjustments on the back panels.

Collector Significance

Because Blackhawk Brewing Company operated with a concentrated regional footprint in eastern Iowa and western Illinois, this quart container is highly sought after by enthusiasts specializing in Iowa brewing history, Native American iconography in breweriana, and quart cone tops.
