Blatz Pilsener Milwaukee's First Beer Flat Top Can

Blatz Milwaukee's First Beer Can

Produced by the Valentin Blatz Brewing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Blatz Pilsener "Milwaukee's First Beer" Flat Top Can highlights an era of classic Midwestern brewing graphics. Blatz was founded in 1851 and frequently highlighted its historic roots through its packaging, featuring slogans that celebrated its status as an early pioneer among Milwaukee's major industrial breweries.

Design and Collector Significance

The graphic layout of the can showcases the distinctive Blatz script accompanied by traditional heraldic framing, the prominent "Pilsener" designation, and the declaration "Brewed in Milwaukee Only". The bold color blocking and clean lines reflect mid-century commercial can design, capturing a competitive chapter in American brewing when Milwaukee's major labels were vying for market dominance.

Variations and Manufacturing

Collectors recognize several variations across the production of this flat top. Subtle differences appear in the layout of the side and reverse panel text, mandatory regulatory and tax statements, and the manufacturer identification marks—most notably from the Continental Can Company, which included specific city and plant codes. These graphic shifts provide collectors with interesting comparative examples from the height of steel flat top packaging.
