Blitz Weinhard Beer 16 Oz Tab Top Can

Blitz-Weinhard 16 Oz Tab Top Can

The Blitz Weinhard Beer 16 Oz Tab Top Can represents a classic half-quart offering from the historic Blitz-Weinhard Brewing Company of Portland, Oregon. Produced at the brewery's longtime facility on West Burnside Street, this sixteen-ounce container was distributed throughout the Pacific Northwest to provide consumers with an alternative to standard twelve-ounce packaging.

Brewery Heritage and Regional Impact

Blitz-Weinhard was an institutional pillar of Pacific Northwest brewing, tracing its roots to nineteenth-century brewmaster Henry Weinhard. Operating as one of the prominent regional independent brewing operations in the western United States, the brewery maintained strong market dominance throughout Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. The company's sixteen-ounce cans were staple fixtures in grocery stores, sporting venues, and taverns across the region, celebrating the brewery's local heritage and deep civic ties to Portland.

Graphic Design and Known Variations

The visual layout of the sixteen-ounce can features the traditional Blitz-Weinhard branding, highlighted by its signature typography and heraldic crest. To accommodate the taller proportions of a half-quart container, the label design was vertically adapted while maintaining the standard visual elements seen on other brewery packaging.

Collectors track distinct production variations across different manufacturing runs of this can. Documented differences include variations in the brewery's mandatory text, shifting placement of canning notations, subtle variations in background tone and accent bands, and the appearance of Universal Product Code (UPC) barcodes on later runs. Variations also encompass differences in metal construction, with examples appearing on both steel and all-aluminum bodies from different canning suppliers.
