Blitz Weinhard Draught Gallon

Blitz-Weinhard Draught Gallon Can

The Blitz Weinhard Draught Gallon can represents an ambitious large-format packaging effort by the historic Blitz-Weinhard Brewing Company of Portland, Oregon. Produced to deliver draft beer directly to social gatherings and home refrigerators, the gallon container stands as a prominent piece of Pacific Northwest breweriana.

Background and Design

Founded by German immigrant Henry Weinhard, the Portland-based brewery established itself as an institutional anchor of Oregon brewing. The draught gallon was introduced during an era when regional brewers sought innovative ways to compete with national brands by offering bulk draught packaging for picnics, sporting events, and parties.

The can features the classic Blitz-Weinhard corporate identity, utilizing bold typography, heraldic imagery, and the brewery's traditional color palette. The expansive surface area provided ample room for the company to highlight its long-standing regional heritage and draught brewing traditions.

Collector Notes

Within the breweriana community, the Blitz Weinhard Draught Gallon has an interesting history. For a long period, it was considered exceptionally difficult to obtain until a notable discovery of preserved examples surfaced, allowing more collectors to add the container to their shelves.

Variations exist among surviving examples, displaying subtle differences in mandatory text, manufacturer marks, and side-panel regulatory statements. Because of Blitz-Weinhard's storied legacy in Portland, this container remains one of the most recognizable and sought-after regional gallon cans from the Pacific Northwest.
