Bohack Draft 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Bohack Draft Can Overview

The Bohack Draft 12 oz tab top can represents a classic piece of private-label supermarket breweriana. Issued under the Richards Brewing Co. name in Newark, New Jersey—a trade name utilized by P. Ballantine & Sons—this can was custom-packaged for distribution by the Bohack Corporation.

The H.C. Bohack supermarket chain was established in Brooklyn, New York, by Henry C. Bohack in 1887. Expanding steadily across New York City and Long Island throughout the twentieth century, the chain became a staple of regional retail. To supply proprietary grocery lines at competitive prices, Bohack contracted established regional breweries to produce house brands under the Bohack name, offering both draft and premium styles.

The label display highlights bold "Bohack Draft" lettering paired with mandatory distributor text crediting the Bohack Corporation. Among collectors of grocery store labels, variations are known to exist, particularly regarding mandatory brewery city markings and minor typography shifts across production runs. The Newark, New Jersey Richards imprint remains a notable piece for East Coast can collectors, representing the intersection of mid-century supermarket branding and Newark's storied brewing heritage.
