Bohack Premium Beer Flat Top Can

Bohack Premium Flat Top History

The Bohack Premium Beer flat top can represents a notable chapter in mid-century American supermarket merchandising and contract brewing. The brand was commissioned by the H.C. Bohack Company, a prominent regional supermarket chain founded in Brooklyn that expanded extensively across Long Island and the greater New York metropolitan area. To supply customers with an economical house brand, Bohack partnered with Richards Brewing Co. of Newark, New Jersey, to package and distribute their proprietary beer.

Within the brewing industry, Richards Brewing Co. operated as an alternate trade name utilized by Newark brewing powerhouse P. Ballantine & Sons. Major regional breweries routinely established separate subsidiary banners like Richards to handle private-label contracts and supermarket accounts without linking their primary flagship brand name to discount retail offerings.

For breweriana collectors, house brands from the New York metropolitan market hold significant appeal due to their direct ties to regional commercial history. The can features classic mid-century graphic elements highlighting the Bohack identity alongside mandatory text identifying the Richards Newark facility. Known variations exist among collectors, exhibiting differences in mandatory line placement, seam construction, and distributor text across production runs.
